Orange Poppies and Fireflies 36"x24" acrylic on canvas
Nancy Leshinky is an emerging artist who has
exhibited in national as well as international juried exhibitions
including a show juried by Janet Bishop curator for the SFMOMA. Her work is in the Northwest School tradition with an emphasis on representational abstraction and Asian art. In 1999 Nancy did studies at the home owned by celebrated northwest mystic painter Morris
Graves, known as the “The Rock”, and her work changed to reflect the
sacred in a new way.
Nancy
begins her acrylic paintings with thin veils of paint applied in a
staccato manner. Some of these layers are transparent and others are
opaque. After several layers of paint her brush strokes begins to slow
and become more meditative and she moves into more detail. Nature is
her usual subject and seldom are people seen in her work other than via
suggestion. She may include a vase, a bowl, a statue or a shoe but this
is as close as we get to knowing there are people in her world.
In 2006 Nancy won the Bellingham Arts Commission city wide competition for her weathervane design titled "Beet Spirit". It is a 9'x4' beet that sits atop Bellingham's Depot Market Square clock tower. It is a nod to author Tom Robbins and his famous book "Jitterbug Perfume" as well as in fond memory of her grandmother who promised "eat your beets they'll make you pretty".
